Teak Campaign Chest Of Dawers

Teak Campaign Chest Of Dawers

Sold

Military Chest Of Drawers.
A wonderful colonial teak two-part Campaign chest of drawers in great condition, with good rich patina and of small proportions. The chest with brass corners, straps and flush fitted brass handles. The upper section with two half drawers and one deep full length one, lower section with two full length drawers, all drawers with ash linings. The fine quality antique chest is raised up on four turned wooden feet. One of the small drawers has had a different lock fitted at some stage in its life. The lock escutcheon is stamped 'Detecter Patent' with Queen Victoria's Cipher stamp "crown in-between VR" indicating that it was produced and used during her reign as Queen. The 'Detecter Patent' lock was obviously a more secure lock and was used to keep the valuables safer.

As the name suggests, Military Chest were used by high-ranking officers so they could have some home comforts whilst on campaign. Other military chests that we have come across have had wooden outer traveling cases. These would have been painted with the owners regiment and name and once camp was set up they would be used for extra storage.
