Jefferies & Co. Fishtail Lawn Tennis Racket, The Angelic.
A good wooden framed tennis racket called 'The Angelic' with a concave throat embossed with the name in gilt 'The Angelic' on one side and 'Jefferies & Co.' on the other. The ash frame has a slight chamfer on the inside edge, is clean and in good condition. It is strung with two central double main strings, white vertical gut stringing, green horizontals with green trebling to the top and bottom. The handle finished with a petit fishtail grip.
The fishtail (fish tail) was an innovation in the Victorian period and was an attractive gimmick to help tennis players to grip their rackets. They were manufactured approximately from the 1890's to the 1920's and their shapely handle is always an attraction to the collector.
