Antique Howie & Sons Tennis Racket
12459
Wooden Lawn Tennis Racket.
A great example of a late 19th century lawn tennis racket. A nice clean ash frame with a walnut convex wedge stamped with the retailer's details 'Howie & Sons of St. Andrews'. The original period gut stringing is in very good condition. It also has three rows of red trebling to the top and two on the bottom. The grip is made up of the ash frame; applied cedar wood fascia strips with boxwood and ebony inlaid stringing, and the handle is finished with a leather butt strip.
In the Scottish Post Office Directories (1882-1915) Howie & Sons operated from 110 South Street, and were listed as fancy repository & trunk makers.
