Patent Aluminium Headed Randall Putter, Sundridge Park.
A good usable patent alloy head putter with original hickory shaft. The shaft is not completely round, more teardrop shape and is more pronounced by the hosel. The shaft goes all the way through the hosel and can be seen on the sole of the club head which is also stamped 'Registered No. 685349, J. Randall, Sundridge Pk, Kent, 9 Ozs 2Drs, Med Lie'. The face of the club with two horizontal rows of inserted lead plugs (sixteen in total). John Randall received a British Patent (No. 186522) for his putter design, dated October 5th, 1922. The idea behind his putter was to create a soft face whilst maintaining weight to the head. This was accomplished by means of two horizontal rows of flush lead plugs in the face of the putter. The putter also had a ridge top, parallel to the face, to help with alignment.
The Randall putters can be seen with either the patent number or the registered design number. The difference being, the patent protects the invention, focusing on functionality and how it works, whilst a registered design protects the visual appearance, such as its shape, pattern or ornamentation.
The measurements shown are the length of the whole club, the width of the face and depth of the head.
The last image is a copy of an old advert of Randall's from Sundridge Park which states 'All clubs hand-made on the premises from specially picked timber, and by experienced Club-makers. Old favourite clubs copied, a speciality. Try my Special Broad-Sole irons'.
