Royal Enfield Motorcycle.
Royal Enfield was the name under which the Enfield Cycle Company made Motorcycles, Bicycles, Lawnmowers and Stationary engines. Royal Enfield was a division of the arms-making company Royal Small Arms Factory in Enfield Lock, this is reflected in the company logo of a cannon with their motto being 'Made like a gun, goes like a Bullet'. The use of the brand name Royal Enfield was licensed by the Crown in 1890.
Royal Enfield revived the Bullet name in 1948 for a sensational new 350 sports bike. In 1955 the Redditch company partnered Madras Motors in India to form 'Enfield India' to assemble the 350cc Bullet under licence from UK components in Madras (now called Chennai) , and by 1962 they were manufacturing complete bikes. The original company was sold to E. & H. P. Smith in 1963 and then later to Norton-Triumph-Villiers (NVT).
'Enfield India' bought the rights to use the Royal Enfield name in 1995.
In 1955, the Indian government looked for a suitable motorcycle for use in patrolling the country's border by its police and army and the Bullet was chosen as the most suitable bike for the job. The Indian government ordered 800 of the 350 cc model Bullets, an enormous order for the time.
Production continues of Royal Enfield bikes making it the oldest motorcycle brand in the world still in production with the Bullet model enjoying the longest motorcycle production run of all time.
