St Andrews Sunday Club, Golf Walking Stick

St Andrews Sunday Club, Golf Walking Stick

Sold

St Andrews Golf Walking Cane, Sunday Club.
A desirable walking cane with the handle in the shape of an early scare headed golf club head. The gentleman's walking stick has a wooden club head with a traditional horn slip along the leading edge of the sole, with three wooden pegs holding it in place. The head is stamped 'St Andrews' and is attached to a greenheart shaft by means of a splice or scare joint. This joint is then further strengthened by whipping with a pitched thread. All beautifully hand made with original well worn brass ferrule end and fitted with white metal rear style back weight . It is a nice good quality golfing walking stick made by a skilled craftsman, possibly even a golf club maker.

The ban on golfing on the Sabbath, Sunday, had the effect of the club makers producing walking sticks for canny golfers. They fashioned the canes with a golf club head as a handle and they became known as 'Sunday Clubs' or 'Sabbath sticks'. It is said that on the Sabbath a Sunday Club owner, when nobody was looking, could still enjoy a crafty putt or swing.
