Famous Cricketers and Cricket Grounds 1895.
Large late Victorian first edition cricket book "Famous Cricketers and Cricket Grounds 1895" edited by C.W. Alcock and published by Hudson & Kearns and 'News of the World', London. The unpaginated book with faded gilt edge pages, green cloth covering with gilt title to front cover with a gilt image of a cricketer (W.G. Grace) in front of the stumps. Internally very clean, cover rather worn, first few pages lose. Throughout the book there are large format full-page photographs of cricketers (majority by E. Hawkins & Co., Brighton) with facsimile signatures and descriptive captions. The last photo is of the books editor ,C.W. Alcock, himself a fair cricketer and footballer in his school days at Harrow. He had over twenty-five years' service in football as the Secretary of the Football Association, and only a little less as Secretary of the Surrey County Cricket Club. He took a leading roll in the formation of the code of rules which resulted ultimately in what is known as the Association game.
