Cabinet Card Photograph Storage Box.
Victorian photograph box to store and hold the cabinet card photographs that were very popular in the late 19th century. The box is covered in red leather with gilt writing to the curved front 'Photographs'. There are a collection of 21 postcards in the box.
Cabinet card photographs measured approximately 4¼ by 6½ inches, their predecessor being the smaller 'carte de visite' (French for visiting card). The card photographs had decoration on the rear of the card mounts which advertised the photographer's name and address. Gradually the mount designs, known as backmarks, grew more ornate, with the card photos becoming very popular in the 1870's.
