Old King Cole Liberty Pipe Rack, Fiddlers Three
Pipe Rack With John Hassall Print - Old King Cole.
A wonderful John Hassall lithograph of 'Old King Cole and his fiddlers three' in original arts and crafts pipe rack frame. These pipe racks were normally retailed through Liberty & Co. of London, although this one has a trade label to verso of 'Rudolph Ackermann, Dealer in Works of Art, 203 Regent Street, corner of conduit Street, London, W, and 30 New Bond Street'. The stunning John Hassall chromolithograph is in good condition and is taken from the British nursery rhyme first attested in 1708, "Old King Cole". The nursery rhyme describes a merry king who called for his pipe, bowl, and musicians, with the details varying among versions.
The most common version being:-
Old King Cole was a merry old soul,
And a merry old soul was he;
He called for his pipe, and he called for his bowl,
And he called for his fiddlers three.
Every fiddler he had a fiddle,
And a very fine fiddle had he;
Oh there's none so rare, as can compare,
With King Cole and his fiddlers three.
