Bronze Figure Of A Skier

Antique Bronze Skier.
A bronze figure of a skier on a naturalistic onyx base Inscribed '1924 Chamonix'. The 1924 Chamonix Games were the first occurrence of the Winter Olympic Games, attracting over 10,000 paying spectators, possibly this bronze may be a memento of the occasion. It is rare to find bronzes on this subject as they do not often come up for sale and the detailing of this piece is exceptional. The bronze winter sculpture is probably a little earlier than the inscription suggests, maybe around 1900. The subject is of a moustached gentleman wearing plus-fours, woollen socks with boots. He is also wearing a polo neck jersey, mittens and woollen hat, standing on long pointed skis and leaning on a pair of long ski poles.
A great piece for the skiing enthusiast.
Chamonix-Mont-Blanc (usually shortened to Chamonix) is a resort area near the junction of France, Switzerland and Italy. At the base of Mont Blanc, the highest summit in the Alps, it's renowned for its skiing. The 1924 Chamonix Games were the very first Winter Olympics and sixteen nations were represented with only 294 athletes participating.

Very good condition. The ski poles are loose and it looks very much as the figure may have been dropped at one stage as he appears a little out of shape at the ankles.
