Albert Clark

1821 - 1928

Albert Clark was an English painter, born in October 1843, and the second son of the acclaimed animal artist James Clark and his wife, Elizabeth (Elizabeth died when Albert was a child). Taught by his father, Albert developed his talent from an early age, becoming particularly known for his paintings of animals-especially horses. At the age of 24, Albert married Ellen Parsons, and together they had four children, one of whom was Frederick Albert Clark. Following in the family tradition, Frederick also became an artist. Tragically, in 1873-five years into their marriage-Ellen died during the birth of their third and fourth children. Two years later, Albert remarried, this time to Harriet Jane Ireland. The couple had three more children, including William Albert Clark, who would also gain recognition as an accomplished animal painter. Although Albert painted many portraits of cattle and dogs throughout his career, his true specialty-like his father's-was equine portraiture. Renowned for his skill, he was frequently commissioned to paint racehorses, often depicted alongside their jockeys.
