Arthur Burgess

1879 - 1957

Arthur Burgess (6 January 1879 - 16 April 1957) was a marine artist and editor, born in Bombala, New South Wales, Australia. He studied art in Sydney and later under the watchful eyes of Julius Olsson and Algernon Talmage in St Ives, Cornwall after he emmigrated to England in 1901. His work was part of the art competitions at the 1928 Summer Olympics and the 1932 Summer Olympics. During the War he became Official Naval Artist for the Australian Government. Specializing in maritime art, both during peacetime and war, he was commissioned by various shipowners to paint their merchant ships and convoys in ports all over the country. Over the years he captured some famous ships to canvas including the Ark Royal, Royal Yacht Britannia, Mauritania and a Sunderland Flying Boat, amongst others. His love of boats saw him paint yachts, battleships, warships, working ships and even barges on the Thames.
