Martin McDaid

It seems Martin McDaid Leith, Edinburgh, Scotland started primarily as a supplier of parts and machinery for the manufacture of golf clubs. He is known to have sold club parts including aluminium heads, tools, ball moulds and machinery for winding golf ball centers, he did however sell clubs stamped with his name. Being an engineer, McDaid is listed at various times as golf club manufacturer, engineer and machinery maker. In 1896 he was awarded a patent for 'improvements in machinery for shaping golf club heads and such like' and with the advent of the rubber core ball he invented a machine for winding around the core. Later, calling himself 'Martin McDaid & Son', he appears to devote his time manufacturing golf balls and grips. He is known to have made the 'Pimpernel' golf ball along with 'Scarlet Runner', the 'Doctor', 'Conqueror' and the 'Iris'.
