The Mitre at Oxford By Cecil Aldin.
A colourful coaching chromolithographic print after Cecil Aldin entitled, Old Country Inns - The Mitre at Oxford. The wonderful coaching print in period frame. The original series of prints was called 'The Six Old Coaching Roads' and included: The Exeter Road - The White Hart at Hook; The Dover Road - The Bull at Dartford; The Great North Road - The Bell at Shilton; The Portsmouth Road - The Talbot at Ripley; The Brighton Road - The Maiden's Head at Uckfield; The Oxford Road - The Angel at Henley. The series was later extended to include The Mitre at Oxford and was renamed Old Country Inns.
The print was published by George Jellicoe, 34 Henrietta Street, Covent Garden, London, and depicts the Oxford coach pulling up outside the Mitre Hotel, one of Oxfords oldest hotels, and the corner of Turl Street. There has been an inn on the site since around 1300 but the present Mitre Inn dates from around 1630. The hotel had always belonged to Lincoln College, and its name probably derives from the college coat of arms, which depicts the mitre of the Bishop of Lincoln. The Mitre's central position meant it was an important coaching inn, and was a good picking up and setting down place for long-distance coaches, as early as 1671 there were coaches running between London and the Mitre three days a week.
