Original John Leech Archery Oil Painting, The Fair Toxopholites.
A fine original archery oil by John Leech titled 'The Fair Toxopholites', painted for his series of social scenes. This was used for the chromolithograph published by Thos. Agnew & Sons, London, Manchester and Liverpool. The painting is signed bottom left-hand corner with title and inscription, The Fair Toxopholites, Constance. "Oh, Mamma! I'm so delighted, I have just made the best Gold, and won the beautiful bracelet given by Captain Rifles". Lucy (disappointed) "Well, Constance, I think you had better not say much about it. You know it was a fluke, for you told me you always shot with your eyes shut, as you feel so very nervous!". Framed in original birds eye maple frame.

John Leech (29 August 1817 - 29 October 1864) was a British caricaturist and illustrator. He was best known for his work for Punch, a humorous magazine for a broad middle-class audience, combining verbal and graphic political satire with light social comedy.
Leech also enjoys fame as the first illustrator of Charles Dickens' 1843 novella 'A Christmas Carol'. He was furthermore a pioneer in comics, creating the recurring character Mr. Briggs and some sequential illustrated gags.
