Set Of R.G. Lawrie Lignum Vitae Lawn Bowls.
A set of four 'Lawrie Grip' lignum vitae lawn bowls by R.G. Lawrie, Glasgow. The bowls are a size 5", with discs on both ends, one blank and the other with initials 'HMLH'. They carry an official I.B.B (International Bowling Board) expiry date stamp for 1949 (this mark was introduced around 1929). Also stamped on the bowls 'R.G. Lawrie, Glasgow, Lawrie Grip Pat 279624'. Official Bias Testers To The International Bowling Board. From 1879 to 1882 Lawrie was listed as a wood and ivory turner, by 1900 he was listed for the first time as a bagpipe maker as well as a lawn-bowling ball and ivory turner. He died in 1904 with the company passing to his two sons.

The wooden stands are not for sale.

R G Lawrie started business in John Street in 1881 as a manufacturer of bowling green bowls. He built machinery which produced bowls much more rapidly than conventional methods, without loss of quality. Another of his inventions was a machine for testing the bias of bowls.
Lawrie's bowls were sold throughout the countries of the British Empire, and in the United States. This encouraged the firm to diversify into the production and sale of tartan souvenirs. The shop proved a magnet for overseas visitors, supplementing Lawrie's extensive mail order business. Reference: Glasgow City Archives, D-PL 2/1/1941
