A fine Edwardian spelter figure depicting the celebrated English sportsman C. B. Fry as a batsman, standing poised at the crease having just played the ball. Cast in spelter, a zinc-based white metal alloy-the figure has an attractive bronzed finish and is mounted on a square plinth.
Fry is shown wearing a traditional cricket cap, pads and carrying his bat, with his stance capturing the quiet anticipation of a batsman waiting for the bowler to deliver. The sculpture conveys the athleticism and character of the game while retaining the distinctive style of early twentieth-century sporting figures.
Charles Burgess Fry (25 April 1872 - 7 September 1956) was one of the most remarkable all-round sportsmen of his generation. Best known for his distinguished cricket career, he represented England at international level and was also an accomplished footballer, playing for England. He competed in rugby to a high standard and famously held the world long-jump record.
His achievements extended well beyond sport. Fry later represented India at the League of Nations and became a figure of considerable public fame, so much so that he was even offered the throne of Albania.
