Antique Slazenger 'Corbally' Flat Bottom Croquet Mallet.
A fine usable flat bottom croquet mallet by Slazenger with brass plate to the bottom with brass reinforcing rings on the ends of the boxwood head, these add weight while helping protect the mallet faces from damage by miss hit shots. The mallet faces are scored with concentric rings that aid the playing of stop shots and follow through roll shots. The mallet head has 'Slazengers Ltd' and 'The Corbally' in black on the side and it is fitted with an octagonal scored and grooved hickory handle. Having an octagonal handle also helps a player 'feel' the alignment of the mallet in play, there are also ebony alignment lines on the head. The handle is marked 3LBS 4 ½ OZS, Selected Hickory.

We have two images of the croquet mallet as advertised in a Slazenger 1916 catalogue.

Slazengers says of the Mallet in the catalogue:-

The "Corbally" mallet as used by the champions.
A record for one year:- The Open Championship, The ladies Championship, The Championship Cup, The Association Gold Medal & numerous other important events were won with The "Corbally" Mallet.

This mallet was specially designed by Mr. Cyril Corbally, the Open Croquet Champion. Mr. Corbally writes:- "I think the mallet very suitable for those who wish to play the front style. Its weight and balance give sufficient power in shooting without lessening its accuracy in approaching, and the grooved handle overcomes to a great degree the tendency of all Mallets to twist in the player's hand."

Fitted with heads of Lignum Vitae or Boxwood - Price 11/- each.
If brass, or aluminium bands, which are recommended to mininise chances of wood splitting, are fitted, there will be an extra charge of 4/6.

The Army and Navy stores catalogue of 1939 - 40 advertised the mallets for 24 shillings each.
