Leather Fishing Case
Vintage Fishing Tackle case.
An exceptional leather fishing tackle case with the interior lined in traditional green baize. The lid is embossed with 'W. v S. IX Lancers' and with some tram line tooling. The case is with the two original wrap round leather straps and the base interior is fitted with five compartments to store your reels and tackle. There would have been a lift out tray originally and the way the lid hinges is a different design to that that is normally seen. The case is in very good condition with good colour and patination. Maker unknown but both Hardy of Alnwick and Farlow's of London made similar cases.
W. v S. are the initials for William Henry von Schroder. He left the Royal Military College as a Gentleman Cadet to become a 2nd Lieutenant in the 9th (Queen's Royal) Lancers on the 4th December 1889. He progressed to Lieutenant in October 1891 but resigned from service in 1897 perhaps because he married Judith Hopwood the year before. In 1914, to help with the War effort he held the temporary rank of Captain as an Assistant Superintendent of the Remount Service, training and supplying horses to the army.
There are also two red luggage labels printed with "J. H. Hopwood, The Estate Office, Mongewell Park, Wallingford, Berks" to the front and to the rear written in ink " Mrs MacKenzie, 12 Heathrise Gardens, Roehampton, SW 15". The Schroder's son John William Henry changed his name by deed poll in 1918 to Hopwood to comply with an indenture of 1906 written to ensure that the Hopwood family name was adopted by beneficiaries of the estate.
