A H Scott Golf Club Walking Stick, Sunday Club, Elie
A H Scott Golf Club Walking Stick, Sunday Club, Elie
28170
Antique Sunday Club, Golf Club Walking Stick By A.H. Scott.
A desirable walking cane with the handle in the shape of a golf club head. The gentleman's walking stick has a persimmon socket head handle with a pegged horn insert and a lead weight to the rear. It is with hickory shaft with red and white hosel bands. The cane end has a new brass ferrule. The head is clearly stamped A.H. Scott (Andrew Herd) with his cleek mark of a crown surmounted by a lion. This cleek mark was in use for about 15 years from 1911, upon the coronation of George V, when Scott became club maker to the king.
The ban on golfing on the Sabbath, Sunday, had the effect of the club makers producing walking sticks for canny golfers. They fashioned the canes with a golf club head as a handle and they became known as 'Sunday Clubs' or 'Sabbath sticks'. It is said that on the Sabbath a Sunday Club owner, when nobody was looking, could still enjoy a crafty putt or swing.
