Lemuel Abbott
Lemuel Francis Abbott was one of the earliest golf portrait painters and his best know picture is the The Blackheath Golfer. His other golf work was of Henry Callender also a Blackheath captain ( 1790 1801 and 1807). Abbott was a distinguished portrait painter and painted portraits of many figures of the day including Admiral Nelson. He was bornin Leicestershire in 1760 the son of a clergyman. Although he exhibited at the Royal Academy he never became an Academician.
