Lemuel Abbott

Lemuel Francis Abbott was one of the earliest golf portrait painters and his best know picture is the 'The Blackheath Golfer'. His other golf work was of Henry Callender, also a Blackheath captain ( 1790, 1801 and 1807). Abbott was a distinguished portrait painter and painted portraits of many figures of the day including Admiral Nelson. He was born in Leicestershire in 1760, the son of a clergyman. Although he exhibited at the Royal Academy, he never became an Academician.
