A rare late 18th Century tole tray with a Badminton scene painted to the centre. The scene is after an 18th Century drawing, an engraving of which shows the painter and engraver respectively, as Joseph Barney and W. Hamiliton, both well known artists. Barney, born in 1751, was the drawing master at Woolwich Military Academy for 27 years. All cadets were expected to be reasonably competent draughtsman and so his was an important position. The painting on the tray differs slightly to the engraving in that a central figure of a girl is missing.
