Caxton Tennis Court Line Marker.
A rare late 19th century chain driven white line marker for grass tennis courts manufactured by F.H. Ayres. The line marker has been restored keeping some of the original finish and having replaced wooden handles. There is a cast plaque on the rear of the machine 'The "Caxton" Lawn Tennis Marker By Her Majesty's Royal Letters Patent, No. 739, Feb 1881, F.H.Ayres, London'. There are two rear wheels one which drives the transfer wheel inside the tub by means of a chain. This wheel rubs against a chute letting the white paint run down onto the main wheel, thus marking the grass court. The chute is on a pivot so it can be lifted to stop the flow of paint.
