Unusual Drinking 'Straw' Hip Flask, Thomas Johnson.
A very nice Victorian leather and plated spirit hip flask with curved body and very unusual lid. The lid is of the same design as the 'Patent Closure' top by Thomas Johnson, London. It is not the usual bayonet or screw top lid, the 'lid' will pivot to expose a conical top with a small hole which is attached to an integral metal tube which sits within the flask. This is used as a straw to suck the contents from the flask to reduce the risk of spillage whilst drinking, suggesting it would have been used on the move. The pocket hip flask is in good original condition with minimal wear and no previous owner's initials with the leather having level viewing windows cut into both sides, the top will unscrew so the flask can be refilled.
Thomas Johnson was active from 1850 to 1898. Johnson worked from Dyers Buildings in Holborn and later from 32 Bedford Row, London WC. He made items for a number of good retailers including Aspreys and Percy Edwards & Co. of 71 Piccadilly, London.
