1830 - 1913

Major Francis Powell Hopkins (1830 - 1913) was a well know golfing artist and journalist who wrote for "The Field" magazine as early as 1863. He very often used the pseudonym "Shortspoon", a type of early hickory golf club. Born in Cambridge but in 1866, upon retirement from the army, moved to North Devon, Westward Ho!. A proficient golfer, Hopkins discovered a talent portraying golfing scenes with a rare skill and liveliness. His watercolours include scenes not only at Westward Ho! but Hoylake, St Andrews, Sandwich and Blackheath.
