Pair Of Angling Watercolors By Major Hopkins.
A wonderful pair of original fishing watercolours, a self portrait of one of the most important golf artists of the Victorian era. Signed and dated 1886. Major Hopkins is well know for his golf watercolours but he was a keen fisherman who included angling among his contributions to 'The Field' magazine and wrote and illustrated "Fishing Experiences of Half a Century". These images were published by McQueen in 1886, The angling pictures have been completed on a light blue paper and painted in monochrome. Got Him! shows two fishermen, one kneeling on the ground looking over the catch whilst the other is having a drink from a beaker, with a wicker creel over his back. Lost Him! shows the same fishermen, the older rod in hand looking very angry whilst the younger looks out over the river with a gaff in his hand. The detail in these pictures is quite remarkable.
These were later printed in colour (see last image) publishing details "Entered according to act of Congress in the year 1886 by M. Knoedler & Co. in the office of the librarian of Congress at Washington. F.P. Hopkins. Del. London Published Sept. 1st 1886 By F.C. McQueen & Sons, 181 Tottenham Court Road. W. Stiefbold & Co. Berlin, Knoedler & Co. New York, Copyright Registered. C.R. Stock, Scult. Printed by McQueen".
