Lance Thackeray
1869 - 1916
Lance Thackeray was an English illustrator, painter and writer who specialised in sporting subjects. He satirised Edwardian society with his humorous illustrations and was a founding member of the London Sketch Club (1898). He worked for 'Punch' as well as being a well known postcard artist, amongst his many humorous illustrations is a set of mixed foursomes playing golf. His other set of well known sporting prints are his set of billiard room scenes. Titled 'A Billiard Match' with each having a separate caption - Snookered, The Cannon, Left and Kissing. He also had a set of fishing scenes 'Catch Of The Season' - 1. 'Cast', 2. 'Hung Up', 3. 'A Nibble' and 4. 'Landed', and a 'Bridge' set - 1. 'May I Play To Hearts?', 2. 'I Double Hearts', 3. 'Chicane' and 4. 'Ruffing A Black Suit'. All showed humour with a young couple being the main characters with double entendre captions.
