Vintage Oil Painting, Poole Harbour By Tivoli

Sold

Oil on board by Arthur De Tivoli, Poole Harbour.
A very good oil on board by the Italian artist Arthur (arturo) de Tivoli (1891 - 1961) of Poole harbour, signed lower right by the artist. There is a hand written label on the rear that reads 'Arthur De Tivoli (fl C.1920's), Pool Harbour, see "Hidden Talents" Jeremy Wood, PBL 1994'.

Little is known of the artist but he was born in Viareggio, Italy, in 1891. Aged 19 he moved to Bournemouth with his mother Anne, his father was living in India. The 1911 census has Arthur as an art student living in Boscombe, Bournemouth, with his mother. He married a Ethel Hedger in Poole in 1930, she sadly past away in 1958. Arthur died in Boscombe, in 1961, it appears they had no children as they left no will.

Poole is Europe's largest natural harbour and a stunning location for all types of watersports fringed with unspoilt woodland and coastal walks. The harbour has a long history of human settlement stretching to pre-Roman times. It is a site of nature conservation, a wetland teeming with wading birds with many international protections in place. It is a Ramsar site which recognises wetlands of international importance particularly for wildfoul. It is also a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSI) which recognises the country's most spectacular and beautiful habitats and a Special Protection Area (SPA).

Just outside Poole Harbour, one mile from the beaches in Poole Bay is Poole Marine Conservation Area. The four square kilometers of sea bed features 10 different types of habitat and is home to more than 360 different marine species. The designation provides protection from damaging activities allowing marine wildlife and habitat to thrive.

Poole Harbour is a thriving mecca for watersports enthusiasts. With over a dozen yacht clubs and marinas, the harbour is alive with all types of craft and the appeal of safe sailing attracts all ages and abilities keen to get on the water.
