Rowing Watercolour By Hal Ludlow, The Rowers Camp.
A fine rowing watercolour by British artist Hal (Henry Stephen) Ludlow (1861-1947). The picture is mounted and framed, signed and dated lower right margin, depicting three male rowers camping by the side of the river. There is a canvas tent in the background with a lantern hanging from the pole, one gentleman is stood up wiping a plate, the two others are sat on the ground, one of which is packing away a kettle. There are two wicker baskets on the ground, some metal dishes, glasses and a pottery earthenware flagon. Behind the standing rower are the oars stood up and lashed together.

Henry Stephen Ludlow (Hal) studied at Heatherleys and Highgate Art Colleges. He became a portrait painter and illustrator for the Illustrated London News, Sketch Magazine etc. He painted in both oils and watercolours. Hal Ludlow was also a fine golfer, he won the 1904 Welsh National Amateur Championship and is famously known for his sculptor of Champion Golfer Harry Vardon.
