Vintage Wooden Arrow Case With Arrows.
Twelve archery target arrows all with owners name, E.G. Hill, and some with numbers. Nine of the arrows are with ebonised shafts with gold painted metal nocks and metal pile (pile-a bullet-shaped head that is commonly used on target arrows). The cresting is in red, fletching of three balloon-shaped feathers (two red and one white), hardwood "footing or foreshaft" that is spliced into the shaft, maker unknown but of a very high quality. The other three arrows are made by the renown arrow maker Harry Purle, London. The arrows again have a spliced hardwood foreshaft and also a spliced hardwood nock. The nock is marked 'Purle'. These have cresting in blue and black, fletching of three balloon-shaped feathers and metal pile. It is thought that Harry W. Purle also supplied Highfield, Buchanan and Aldred with arrows.
The arrows come in a specially designed pine box with each arrow slotting into its own hole. each arrow measures 63 cm.
The arrows are part of a collection we acquired and there was an envelope in one of the items, this has been photographed and shows that the archery equipment came from Warwickshire.

Target archery became popular during the Victorian period (1837-1901), when recreational archery was at its height of popularity.
