Billiard Trophy, Pewter Tankard Hinged Dome Topped Lid

Billiard Trophy, Pewter Tankard Hinged Dome Topped Lid

Sold

Billiard / Snooker Trophy.
A glass bottom pewter tankard with hinged dome topped lid with scrolling thumb rest. The antique pewter tankard engraved "Billiard Match, H. Littledale v A.H Edwards, 1866" with two crossed billiard cues and three balls. The rim of the base stamped "James Dixon & Son, 64, 482". The tankard is the former property of H. Littledale, we have a second tankard of his from another billiard match.

It is thought that the glass bottomed tankard was developed as a way of refusing the King's shilling, the drinker could see the coin in the bottom of the glass and refuse the drink, thus avoiding unwittingly being conscripted into the British army or navy.
