Victorian Cricket egg cup carousel with four egg cups and accompanying spoons. The unique breakfast centerpiece has an ornate square base raised on ball feet with a central support with brackets for the spoons. The handle has crossed cricket bats with stumps, bails and a ball. There is an engraved shield on the support 'Presented by the Cahirlorke Cricket Club to Miss Agnes Knox on her marriage Dec 13th 1894'. The base marked with James Deakin & Sons mark with their trade mark of a 'Desk Bell' (sometimes mistaken for a lamp) and 'EPGS, N9176'.
James Deakin & Sons was founded in Sheffield by James in 1866. He was first joined by his son William and later in 1886 by two more of his sons, John and Albert. When James retired in 1893 the business was continued by the three sons. In 1897 the firm was converted into a limited liability company under the style James Deakin & Sons Ltd. There was another Sheffield manufacturer having the same initials JD&S. James Deakin & Sons used the 'Desk Bell' mark to identify without doubt a Deakin product. "JD & S" used by another Sheffield manufacturer, James Deakin & Sons, used a "Trumpet and Banner" mark to identify their work.
