George Unite Shooting Place Finder.
A fine silver shooting place finder, also known as a butt marker, by the renowned silversmith George Unite, celebrated for his high-quality and well-designed shooting accessories. The Butt marker is fully hallmarked, displaying the lion passant for sterling silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, and the date letter "A" corresponding to 1925, along with the maker's mark "GU" for George Unite. The spring-loaded marker opens in a distinctive fan shape (clam shell), revealing the original eight numbered pegs, all intact. The outer face of the placefinder is engraved "C.H.G.M 1926". A superb and highly collectible example of early 20th-century sporting silver, combining craftsmanship, functionality, and provenance.

The numbered pegs are randomly inserted into the clam shell case, number side down. Each shooter then takes their turn to draw a peg and the revealed number shows the actual shooting position (butt) that they will use for the first drive. Place finders were very popular from the 1900's and are making a resurgence today, with many shooters looking out for good antique examples.
