Table Top Miniature Croquet Set On Stand With Original Box.
An original parlour game of miniature croquet displayed on its original mahogany stand and complete with its original storage box. The set contains 8 boxwood mallets, each having a coloured band of red 1,2,3 & 4 and the same in blue, 8 balls and two posts with corresponding coloured bands and 10 hoops with lead weighted feet. To complete the set there are all the fittings for a table to attach a cloth band to stop the balls from rolling off the table. The stand will unscrew and everything can be stored in the box, lid painted with the word 'Croquet'.
The size shown is for the box, mallets are 30 cm in length, three handles are later replacements.
Table Croquet was likely the invention of the Victorians who had a craze for all sorts of parlour games. A whole number of indoor/parlour games were invented, this included miniaturised versions of the popular outdoor games at the time, including Tennis, bowls and croquet. These games were manufactured by the great games manufacturers of the time such as John Jaques and F. H. Ayres.
