Antique Equestrian Print, Samuel Edmund Waller, Twixt Love And Duty.
Equestrian Print, S.E. Waller.
A fine photogravure after the original painting by Samuel Edmund Waller titled 'Twixt Love And Duty'. The 'romantic' print depicts an elopement scene between a lady and her gentleman, the lady taking one final look behind at the house just visible between the gates. There is also another man present who is tightening the straps on the ladies side saddle. Waller's pictures are great at telling a story effectively and dramatically, because not only was he an artist but also a great illustrator. The artist's signature is printed in the image at the lower right corner with the date 1884. Below the image to the left the artist is given credit for the original painting, followed by the title in the center 'TWIXT LOVE AND DUTY', and the name of the printers 'Goupil & Co.' to the right. Under the title it states 'From the Original Picture in the Collection of John C. Holder, Esq. London. Published May 1st 1885 by I.P. Mendoza, St. James's Gallery, King St. St. James's New York, M. Knoedler & Co. Printed in Paris.
