Two Book Volumes Of 'British Freshwater Fishes' By The Rev. W. Houghton. First edition (1879) fishing book, bevelled edge hard bound copies of 'British Freshwater Fishes' by The Rev. W. Houghton. M.A., F.L.S. The two volumes are covered in pebbled faux-red leather cloth with gilt title on front and spine, also having gilt pictorial vignettes of an angler wearing waders in the river holding a fish on the covers, with black pictorial decorations to the corners of a geometric image of three-fish-one-head. These fishing books were illustrated by A.F. Lydon and published by 'London: William Mackenzie, 69, Ludgate Hill E.C. Edinburgh and Dublin'. The forty colour chromolithographic plates (with tissue guards) depict fish either in or by their natural habitat, also there are many engraved views of regions where the fish are found, with extensive text discussing the characteristics of the species and their habitats, approximately 100 pages per book.
