Malloch Sun & Planet 3 ¾" Fishing Reel In Leather Case
P D Malloch Patented "Sun and Planet" Fishing Reel.
A rare Malloch's of Perth patent Sun & Planet 3 ¾ inch geared salmon reel in a leather D case. The reel made with Bakelite back plate, plated rims, brass foot plate, brass pillars and brass face plate with oval logo 'Malloch's Patent'. The reel still with old silk line, the drum is 2" deep and with single ebonized multifaceted handle. The reel retains the original finish and winds excellent with a good strong check. The reel action is driven by a system of gears inside the winding plate. The handle has a small cog (the "planet") on the end which engages with the larger cog (the "sun") attached to the drum spindle, hence the name "Sun and Planet". As the winding plate is turned the cogs engage and the drum turns. If a fish takes line, then rather than the entire winding plate turning, just the handle spins on its axis.Malloch patented his reel in about 1880.
