Folding Portable Ilkley Couch.
A late 19th century tri-folding mahogany campaign day bed with cushions. The portable travelling day bed is fully adjustable with the three caned sections with ratchets allowing the bed /couch to be altered from an upright chair to a flat bed, with numerous positions in between. Its versatility makes it a very practical piece of furniture, can be used as a spare bed and ideal for a summer house or conservatory. The couch has two wooden pegs at one end to prevent the cushions or mattress sliding off and is raised up on six turned legs with brown ceramic castors. The legs have wooden threads and will unscrew from the base and the fact that the base can nearly be folded in half makes storage or travel easy.
The size shown is when it is in the flat position.
This Day Bed is unnamed and although various companies made them, Leversons, Alfred Carter or Robinsons & Sons, Robinson & Sons of Ilkley, West Yorkshire, were the originator of this design of articulated couch hence how they have gotten the name 'Ilkley Couch'.
