Rocking Chair, R. W. Winfield.
A late 19th Century steel framed rocking chair after R. W. Winfield. The chair has a steel frame with brass fittings, padded leather arm rests and a fixed upholstered padded tan leather button back cushion of a slung hammock design over a partly wooden slatted base. This highly comfortable rocking chair demonstrates early industrial minimalism at its best. This style of chair is an evolution of the metal tubular rocking chair that Winfield first exhibited at Crystal Palace in London for The Great Exhibition of 1851. Winfield is listed in the various directories between 1835 and 1890 with having a factory in Birmingham and office in Fleet Street, London.
