In 1457 James II banned golf and football in a bid to encourage young men to attend church and practise their archery. Golf and football were so widespread and popular that Parliament considered them a problem serious enough for legislation, banning the playing of such sports on a Sunday. An extract from the Act of 6 March 1457:- football and golf should be utterly condemned and stopped. And that a pair of targets should be made up at all parish churches and shooting should be practised each Sunday.

The artist was a member of the Royal Watercolour Society and The Royal Institute exhibiting at the Royal Academy between 1872 and 1904.
