Golf Watercolour By Charles Hunt, 'Fiery of Musselburgh'.
A charming vintage caricature-style watercolour illustration of a the famous caddie 'Fiery of Musselburgh'. The subject in question is the famous Musselburgh caddie John Carey, affectionately known as 'Fiery'. The picture shows Carey standing in a natural grassy area, golf clubs under his left arm (as was the usual method for the caddy to carry the clubs at that time). He is wearing his Balmoral bonnet, dark brown jacket and long trousers. The hand-written title reads: 'Fiery of Musselburgh', to the right of the figure is the artist's signature: C. Hunt. This is a very good interpretation of one of the golfing cigarette cards by Cope's. The original cigarette cards by Cope Bros. & Co., Ltd. were produced in 1900 and are the most sort-after set of golfing cigarette cards, with the original artwork painted by George Pipeshank and features many of the great players and characters of the day. This watercolour has been done by a very proficient and accomplished artist who has signed the piece, C.Hunt.
Fiery was a professional caddie and was always dressed in his Balmoral bonnet. He was in great demand and caddied for many of the distinguished amateurs and professionals of his time, it is said Willie Park Junior never played in an important match, home or away, without the famous caddie by his side.
The last image shows a second watercolour, 'Lord Stormont Darling - DUFFERS YET!', also available and being sold separately.
