A rare 1928 hard bound 'Steward's' edition of the Rules & List Of Members of the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews. Original brown boards are faded and have gilt title 'Rules & List Of Members', the emblem of Royal And Ancient Golf Club and 'STEWARD' to the front. On the flyleaf there is a bookplate for David Stirk.
'Rules of the Royal And Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews with Alphabetical List Of Members. Telegrams: "Ancient" St. Andrews, Telephone No. 13 - 1928'. The book lists all the different Committees and their members, the spring and autumn meetings, rules of the club, rules of the golf committees, alphabetical List Of Members as of January 1928 with their dates of admission (John Ball being an Honorary member since 1907), members of the Supernumerary list, list of Captains & Medal Holders (Silver Cup, Gold Medal, Silver Cross, Silver Medal, George Glennie Medal, Calcutta Cup, Queen Victoria Jubilee Vase, Silver Boomerang). There is also a list of members who have won the Amateur Golf Championship - Allan Fullarton Macfie, Horace G. Hutchinson, John E. Laidlay, Leslie Balfour Melville, F.G. Tait, Charles Hutchings, Robert Maxwell, Arthur Gordon BarryRoger henry Wethered, Robert Harris, and members who have won the Open Golf Championship - Robert Tyre Jones, jun.

A bookplate, or ex libris, is a small print for pasting inside the cover of a book, to express ownership. By the late 19th century, bookplates had developed into a highly imaginative form of miniature art.
