Alloy Head Spalding Putter, Youds' Patent
Alloy Head Spalding Putter, Youds' Patent
Spalding Hickory Mallet Putter.
This is a Youds' Patent Alloy Lead Face Mallet Putter, a fine and usable example of early 20th-century golf innovation. Featuring a hickory shaft and a suede leather grip, this Spalding-marked putter is both collectible and practical for play. The aluminium mallet-style head is fitted with a distinctive in-filled lead face insert, hardly noticeable by its aged patination as it blends seamlessly with the surrounding dark alloy. The crown bears crisp, clear stamping: "Spalding, Youds' Patent." The design originates from Youds' British Patent No. 212, dated January 3rd, 1908, which covered the use of a lead face within an aluminium head to soften impact and enhance feel. Marketed by A.G. Spalding & Bros. from around 1912 for approximately six years, this putter is a notable example of early golf club experimentation and remains a charming piece for collectors or traditional players alike.
The measurements shown are the length of the shaft with hosel and the width and depth of the face.
