Antique Golf Club, Excelite Covered Wood
Antique Golf Club, Excelite Covered Wood
Antique Excelite Driver, Golf Club.
A very rare and sort after golf club, the 'EXCELITE' driver. This is a persimmon socket head Driver with the club head completely encased in a layer of black vulcanite, the lead weight and horn insert are visible under the layer. The club with hickory shaft and suede leather grip, crown of the club head stamped 'EXCELITE, REGd COVERED' with fine cross-hatched face markings. The maker of this club is unknown, although an Ealing golf professional, G. Charles also produced a club with a similar covering. The idea behind the wooden heads encased in black vulcanite was to waterproof the heads and increase their durability. The rarity of these clubs lends us to believe they were not accepted by the golfers of the day and would be a great addition to a collection.
The measurements shown are the length of the whole club, the width of the face and depth of the head.
