Antique Golf Club Driver, R. Whitty.
A period small socket head persimmon wood driver, by R. Whitty. This great looking small headed club has a polished club head, lead weight to the rear and the traditional horn slip along the leading edge of the sole. The crown of the club head is stamped 'R. Whitty, 19 Tithebarn Street, Liverpool'. The original hickory shaft fitted with a suede leather grip, although it has been cut down to accommodate a junior player.
The measurements shown are the length of the whole club, the width of the face and depth of the head.
Richard Oxley Whitty, born in Liverpool in 1853, was one of the eight children of John Whitty, a hatter born in 1810. Alongside his older brother Henry Whitty, Richard became involved in the growing fishing tackle trade in Liverpool during the late nineteenth century.
In 1881, Richard Whitty was recorded as a piscator, or angler/fisherman, with his sister listed as his assistant. By 1891 he had progressed into business as a fishing tackle dealer, reflecting the increasing popularity of angling and sporting pursuits during the Victorian period. By 1894, Richard Whitty was established as a fishing tackle maker with premises at 14 Tithebarn Street and 4 Granville Buildings, Liverpool. His business continued to grow and by 1900 he had moved operations to 19 Tithebarn Street, where he was still listed as a fishing tackle maker. In 1901, Richard Whitty was described as a Sporting Goods Manufacturer and Employer, operating from the same Tithebarn Street address. This change in description suggests that the business had expanded beyond fishing tackle into the wider sporting goods trade, mirroring the broader commercial growth experienced in Liverpool at the turn of the twentieth century.
The Whitty brothers appear to have prospered considerably during the 1890s, as evidenced by improvements in both their business activities and residential circumstances between 1891 and 1901.
