Mahogany Starback Fishing Reel With Brass Fittings
Mahogany Starback Fishing Reel With Brass Fittings
5½" Slater Pattern Nottingham Starback Fishing Reel.
A fine 5½-inch Slater Pattern Nottingham Starback centrepin fishing reel, crafted from walnut and stamped A.W. Gamage Ltd. Based on David Slater's celebrated original design, these distinctive wooden Starback reels are among the most recognisable and sought-after patterns in traditional British angling tackle.
This well-made example is fitted with the desirable optional check mechanism, a brass-backed spool, brass line guard, brass foot, and a pair of turned bone handles mounted on brass backplates. The characteristic brass starback is clearly stamped with the retailer's details, while the reel displays an attractive, even patina consistent with its age and careful use, preserving the character expected of an authentic period example.
Presented in good, clean condition throughout, this is an excellent example of the Slater Pattern and a worthy addition to any serious collection of antique fishing tackle.
Dimensions: The stated reel depth excludes the handles, which project approximately 3 cm beyond the reel.
