Antique Charles L. Millar Golf Walking Stick, Glasgow.
A desirable walking cane with the handle in the shape of a diamond back golf club head made by Charles L. Millar, Glasgow. The gentleman's walking stick has an iron club head handle stamped with a 'Thistle' cleek mark and finished with a brass ferrule end. The club head is also stamped with the initials 'DB', 'Warranted Hand Forged' and is attached to a hickory shaft.
It is known that Charles L. Millar of Glasgow used the 'Thistle' cleek mark. He started his business in 1895, was prolific, but little is known. He was a cleekmaker who also produced and sold two private brands under the names of Glasgow Golf Co. and Thistle Golf Co.
The ban on golfing on the Sabbath, Sunday, had the effect of the club makers producing walking sticks for canny golfers. They fashioned the canes with a golf club head as a handle and they became known as 'Sunday Clubs' or 'Sabbath sticks'. It is said that on the Sabbath a Sunday Club owner, when nobody was looking, could still enjoy a crafty putt or swing.
