Antique Walking Stick Golf Club, Rut Iron Sunday Club

Antique Walking Stick Golf Club, Rut Iron Sunday Club

Sold

Bronze Rut Iron Sunday Club, Golf Walking Stick.
An original late 19th Century rut iron golf club walking stick with hickory shaft and an old brass ferrule. The gentleman's walking stick has a golf club head handle in the form of a rut iron, also called rutter or track iron. Rut irons were commonly used to hit the ball from deep cart tracks or ruts etc. as they had small round heads. The bronze head is engraved with makers details 'Rushmere Belfast' to the rear and the face engraved with owners initial 'RCG'.

The ban on golfing on the Sabbath, Sunday, had the effect of the club makers producing walking sticks for canny golfers. They fashioned the canes with a golf club head as a handle and they became known as 'Sunday Clubs' or 'Sabbath sticks'. It is said that on the Sabbath a Sunday Club owner, when nobody was looking, could still enjoy a crafty putt or swing.
