Scared Head Golf Club, Short Spoon By Robert Forgan.
An excellent slender long nose golf club, short spoon, by Robert Forgan of St Andrews. This club has a wonderful, graceful curved shape face and carries a good large club maker's stamp 'R. Forgan' (which was used in Forgans early days) with the Prince of Wales plume of three feathers. The stained and polished beech-wood head in good condition with lead weight to the rear, traditional horn slip along the leading edge of the sole and a splice joint with whipping. The hickory shaft is stiff and thick, probably specially ordered by the owner. The shaft stamped 'Anderson & Son of Princess Street Edinburgh' with sheep skin grip. A wonderful collector's item of great quality.
Approximate head size:-
a = 8cm
b = 2.9cm
c = 4.3cm
The early clubs are made with long slender shallow-faced heads with an ash or hickory shaft glued to the head by means of a splice or scare joint. This joint is then further strengthened by whipping with a pitched thread. All beautifully hand made by craftsmen of the time.
