James Gourlay Golf Club Walking Stick, Steel Head Sunday Club
Golf Club Walking Stick, James Gourlay, Carnoustie.
A good sunday club walking cane with the handle in the shape of a golf club head made by the cleekmaker James Gourlay. The gentleman's walking stick has an iron club head handle with a bevelled heel and toe, stamped James Gourlay, Carnoustie. The walking cane with a hickory shaft and finished with a new brass ferrule end. The Gourlay family came from Carnoustie and both father and son were named James. The Gourlays made clubs for many years and forged many club heads for Robert Simpson and other club makers.
The ban on golfing on the Sabbath, Sunday, had the effect of the club makers producing walking sticks for canny golfers. They fashioned the canes with a golf club head as a handle and they became known as 'Sunday Clubs' or 'Sabbath sticks'. It is said that on the Sabbath a Sunday Club owner, when nobody was looking, could still enjoy a crafty putt or swing.
